The Beauty in Unpleasantness

At times when I’ve crossed unpleasantness in my life, I wonder what in the world could that be about. Many times, it is more like “Really! Why do I have to slog through this?” Pain and suffering is one of life’s true mysteries, no doubt about it. Lately, I feel a light has shown on a tiny piece of the mystery – a bit of unraveling has given me a little perspective.

What if it has to do with the law of science that says, for every reaction there is an equal and opposite reaction? What if it is meant to inspire us to action, rather than the ‘Why me’ victim mentality? I guess what I am saying is that seeing what we don’t want may help us define what we do want and motivate us to move in that direction.

For instance, what if when we:

• See someone being ugly, mean or hateful to someone. Instead of forgetting it or dismissing it as something we had to unfortunately watch or go through, we make a mental note to be more kind to the next person we come across.
• See someone with a serious illness. We remember how we felt last time sick and give them extra care. And, we go home and eat a little healthier, exercise a little more.
• Get cut off while trying to merge into the traffic or get taken to the cleaners by the automobile dealership. We resolve to treat others with more respect, giving a little more, taking a little less.

Just food for thought. If you have any examples of seemingly negative situations that can create a positive, equal and opposite reaction in our lives, please hit the yellow comment button and chime in.
