The Self-Talk Series: I’d give to you a day just like today

“If I had a day that I could give you
I’d give to you a day just like today
If I had a song that I could sing for you
I’d sing a song to make you feel this way” — John Denver from Sunshine on My Shoulders lyrics

“Today I will enjoy the simple pleasures — the sun as it warms my face through the driver’s side window, the waiter that remembers that I always order the linguini with white clam sauce and recites it with an inquisitive smile as soon as she reaches the table, the fresh-faced kiddos as they run on the soccer field. Beaming faces framed by sweat slicked hair, they show me how to live intensely in the now. I know the best things in life are free. I will stop and admire the sparkling water in a jubilant fountain. I will feel my intern’s pride when I tell her she has produced the best piece of work I’ve seen in a long time. I will pull out an old stunt that makes my boyfriend and I laugh hysterically until our sides hurt. Smells that waft from my grill-master neighbor as I take my nightly walk will not go unappreciated. I feel deep gratefulness for all of my creature comforts – my old fuzzy slippers, the well-stocked pantry, my good ole 1980’s ocean-side Gilad recorded workouts, the warm lavender-scented salt bath that soothes those muscles afterward. Today will be miraculous because I will notice. I will appreciate. I will be fully present.”
